Nathaniel Calhoun, Vice Chairman of Global Grand Challenges and the Managing Director of the Global Solutions Program at Singularity University talks about Poverty, Education and Developmental Barriers in Africa. He aims to have a positive impact on these problems through the use of exponential technology.

Having personally lived in several African countries for a number of years, Nathanial highlights some of the very basic problems that western people can’t conceive of, like unfair banking system that charges extortionate fees, and a weak education system that doesn’t even provide separate bathroom facilities for girls in schools. Just like everywhere in the world, teachers are not being compensated properly, keeping them in abject poverty.

Nathaniel advocates a “how to fish” teaching strategy vs. “give them fish to eat”.
