Belouga – Connecting Classrooms Around The World

Recently I spoke with Alex Mathews, a senior web application developer at Belouga, a free, web-based educational platform connecting classrooms all around the world. This cutting-edge company has quickly been expanding, now offering over 900 classes in 60+ countries since their launch in September 2016. Incorporating easy to use technology, Belouga is the perfect enhancement for any teacher looking to expand his or her classroom beyond borders. Their platform also rewards participating students with points and uses these points to provide items to schools around the world that are under-resourced.

    Bio:

Founded in 2016, Belouga was started with the mission to encourage intercultural communication to create a better tomorrow. We’re building a global ecosystem where students and teachers can connect, collaborate and learn from one another by identifying similarities and embracing differences through everyday communication that is fun and educational.

With the advancement of technology in the classroom, we saw an amazing opportunity to connect students from all over the world, regardless of timezones. Along with bringing students together, we also saw an opportunity to enhance student life around the world on a daily basis.

  • Denis Noble – The Cutting Edge of Biology

Denis Noble – The Cutting Edge of Biology

Denis Noble CBE FRS FRCP FMedSci has a veritable alphabet soup after his name. It’s kind of hard to pronounce, and it always becomes a point of conversation for him. But you don’t get that many letters after your name for nothing. Noble is a longtime public intellectual, having been the first to mathematically describe the heart’s pacemaker with computer models. And then the first to explain it to everyone else.

“I think what we’re witnessing at the moment is quite a fundamental change in the way in which biology is viewed,” says Noble.

He goes into further detail. Most people think of our origins as a species to be “solved,” to be “all sorted out.” In fact, the theory of evolution is just that: a theory.

There is still late-breaking news in gene mutation and selection in the field. There’s still a lot to figure out.

  • How J.R. Skok and the “Made of Mars” Initiative Could Save Humanity

How J.R. Skok and the “Made of Mars” Initiative Could Save Humanity

“We’re either going to go into space or we’re going to go extinct here on Earth,” says explorer and planetary geologist J.R. Skok. That’s why Skok has committed his life to the study of Mars. He feels it’s humanity’s first step in living off-Earth.

To Skok, Mars is perfect—even better than the moon—because it’s far enough away to be a mystery we should solve, yet close enough for us to travel there in a matter of months. He discusses evidence that, despite Mar’s current status as a “dead” frozen world, ancient Mars was “dynamic”.

Skok explains why simply studying the history of Earth is not enough to understand how humanity can exist extra-terrestrially. He also reveals how you can help make this possible.

He also talks about his current work with NASA’s next-generation Rover and his “Made of Mars” initiative. The latter is Skok’s ambitious brainchild that he believes will help solve some of the important issues currently involved with future Martian exploration and settlement.

You’ll also hear about the following:

    • Why our understanding of Iceland and hot springs worldwide is crucial to the understanding of ancient Mars
    • How his studies and experiences have impacted his perception of spirituality and his religious beliefs
    • How the red carpet walk and attire of a given celebrity could contribute to the future exploration and understanding of Mars

  • Pavel Bains, CEO of Singapore-Based Bluzelle, Talks Blockchain Technology’s Surprising Impact on the Financial Industry

Pavel Bains, CEO of Singapore-Based Bluzelle, Talks Blockchain Technology’s Surprising Impact on the Financial Industry

Bluzelle CEO Pavel Bains likes to make the complicated seem uncomplicated, as when he describes blockchain as simply an “authentication and verification of data between parties that inherently might not trust each other.”

But he might be on to something.

These days, threats like money laundering and terrorism have banks and regulatory agencies nervous.

Identity Management and KYC have become costly in both time and resources when banks and insurance companies onboard new customers.

As regulations increase, so do non-compliance penalties and other complications.

But Bains believes the solution is as simple as leveraging blockchain technology (even as financial institutions have been slow to adopt it despite widespread interest).

After listening to Pavel Bains give his perspective, you hope he’s right in his prediction of how soon this could be implemented.

    Bains also discusses:

    • When a blockchain is not really a blockchain
    • How a 9/11 Thought Experiment can explain why more and more companies have become willing to undergo the process of costly compliance, particularly with access to the “Golden Truth”
    • Two reasons why he discounts a Big Brother-type of threat
    • What clients really want from Bluzelle
    • At the very end, his prediction on how blockchain will impact your kids and grandkids’ insurance policies

  • Learn How Via Science Uses Big Math on a Tiny Scale to Improve AI and Solve Huge Problems

Learn How Via Science Uses Big Math on a Tiny Scale to Improve AI and Solve Huge Problems

When your house loses power, it’s irritating, even problematic. But what if the power outage is scaled up—across the region, state, or even nation? That’s what keeps Colin Gounden awake at night.

Gounden is CEO of Via Science, a company that develops software solutions that help identify risks to a given area’s critical infrastructure. AI can help this by processing given data to help decisions get made. Yet, there are critical limitations to AI’s abilities that still need solving before this shows efficacy.

Gounden also explains “explainable AI” and how it could help fix “algorithm aversion”, brought on perhaps in part by the AI’s inability to understand causal concepts that any 3-year-old can. Finally, find out why he astoundingly likens the current state of AI to the state of the Internet in the mid-1990s.

    Here’s what else you’ll hear:

    • A major drawback of AI and why one associated aspect of it may never be solved in our lifetime
    • HowWar Games, The Terminator, and The Matrix all perpetuate a certain “machine intelligence” myth that Via Science hopes to erase by combining and implementing two specific elements
    • Why and how AI has come so far in the last 5-10 years after little progress in the previous 50, including a breakthrough based on the mathematical concepts of uncertainty

  • Chris Harrison – Making Human-Computer Interaction Delightful

Chris Harrison – Making Human-Computer Interaction Delightful

What if touchscreen technology could be applied to whole environments? Could you have a multi-touch sensitive house, with all the walls receiving input from the user?

These are the kinds of questions posed by Chris Harrison, professor at CMU. Harrison is a computer scientist by training, and the focus of his research is human-computer interaction. Harrison explains that it’s taking insights from computer science and science generally and “applying them to this very specific problem of trying to get the interaction between human and computer more powerful, more intuitive, and overall just more delightful.

    ”

The touch screen experience hasn’t really changed in the past 10 years, since the release of the iPhone. Chris Harrison sees touch screen technology becoming a more ubiquitous element in our rapidly changing world. It’ll be more than the little rectangle in your pocket, or your bag.

It could be part of your interface to everyday life.

  • Equibit – Trading Securities with a Blockchain

Equibit – Trading Securities with a Blockchain

Like dollar bills, securities are a tradeable financial asset. And like dollar bills, ultimately, when it comes right down to it, securities are just words on paper.

The founders of Equibit realized what had been done for the dollar could be done for securities.

They realized that there was a better, safer, faster Blockchain application.

Chris Horlacher of Equibit explains. “We use the BitCoin codebase, and we made a number of modifications and upgrades and enhancements to it, to make it suitable to operate a securities marketplace on.” They’ve created an open, global system that can be used according to any compliance regime.

  • Help Scout – Starting a Much Needed Conversation

Help Scout – Starting a Much Needed Conversation

Historically, customer service (CS) is an impersonal experience.

You get assigned a ticket, and a case number, and you receive emails from a no-reply address.

Often, it doesn’t feel like you’re talking to a real human being. From the company’s side, all that systematic organization makes sense: CS is dealing with a lot of people. But for the user, it can be frustrating and slow.

Help Scout is a tool designed to facilitate a real conversation between users and CS.
The idea behind Help Scout was to create the first “invisible helpdesk.” It’s email management software that can be deployed at scale. On the CS side, there’s an elegant UI that blends Help Scout into a normal email inbox. For users, it’s like receiving personal emails from an individual CS person. Help Scout is used by 8000 companies across the world in 140 different countries.

  • Worried about the Safety, Monitoring, and Storage of Your Data? Here’s How BigID Is Helping to Protect It

Worried about the Safety, Monitoring, and Storage of Your Data? Here’s How BigID Is Helping to Protect It

Your data is a fundamental right, according to Dimitri Sirota, CEO of BigID, and everyone “has a legal right to their data.

” “Companies that…collect and process [the] data don’t own it.”

With that shot fired, Sirota describes how the EU is taking the global lead on this with legislation (the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR) outlining what companies are required to do in tracking and monitoring consumer data. He reveals not only which types of data must be managed and protected but also how companies are required to comply when a consumer asks for their own data.

Sirota also explains the necessity for the harsh penalties that are incurred when businesses don’t comply—and why some penalties are even more severe than required.

He further defends the strict penalties with three examples of successful innovations brought about by strict compliance requirements.

In this podcast, you’ll also learn:

    • Two ways in which the EU GDPR is notable and is paving the way for action in places like Canada, China, Australia, and Japan
    • How the Internet of Things (IoT) will be impacted
    • Four ways these guidelines will benefit the companies themselves, despite the strict regulations and harsh penalties to protect consumers

  • Mass Migration of Humans into Space? Daniel Faber, former CEO of Deep Space Industries Explains How, Why & When

Mass Migration of Humans into Space? Daniel Faber, former CEO of Deep Space Industries Explains How, Why & When

“It’d be a good thing to get people off Earth,” and with that, this Future Tech podcast, Exploring Deep Space, really begins as we visit with Daniel Faber, former CEO of Deep Space Industries (DSI).

Although no longer with DSI, Faber is continuing to honor his calling and pursue his goal: planning and being prepared for the inevitability that is humans living off-Earth. The risks inherent to us here on Earth (meteorites or global cataclysms, for instance) can be mitigated by a move into space, Faber points out.

Currently, he works on models that would make it feasible for permanent human off-Earth settlements.

He also gives his thoughts on how soon humanity will be able to live permanently off-Earth and how, once a certain goal is realized, the rest of the dominoes will fall. You’ll also learn how he sincerely believes that it will be more economical to live off-Earth than on Earth—you’ll shake your head in wonder when you hear how this is possible (we did!

    ).

Faber finishes by mentioning the endless number of entrepreneurial possibilities that have yet to be realized, endeavors just waiting for creative, innovative thinkers to brainstorm and create them.

If you’re a serial entrepreneur yearning for a way to pioneer an industry or product that currently does not exist, you’ll want to hear the 4 industries Faber suggests, including 2 that have no competition – yet. At the end of this podcast, Faber reveals how enterprising thinkers can get in touch with him, so listen ASAP and get ahead of the crowd.

    You’ll also learn:

    • Why he thinks the first permanent off-Earth human civilizations will not be on Mars, the moon, or places like that but will instead be in a much better, much more hospitable place—and why it’s better
    • The #1 reason that will successfully encourage people to live off-Earth—and until this happens, humans won’t live off-planet
    • That while solving issues with getting water and growing enough food in space are crucial, there’s something more important than either for humans to be able to live in space
