Robots in Space! – Alicia Kavelaars, Founder and CTO, OffWorld – How Advanced Machine Learning is Expanding Capabilities for Robotic Workforces in Extreme Environments

Alicia Kavelaars, Founder, and CTO of OffWorld (offworld.ai) discuss her company’s efforts to build robotic technology for extreme environments, with advanced machine learning and AI, to assist humans to be offworld. Offworld, roughly defined as ‘away from earth’ is the core point of Kavelaars’ company’s mission—to enable “smart robots working under human supervision on and offworld, turning the inner solar system into a better, gentler, greener place for life and civilization.”

While experimentation in space is costly, Kavelaars explains that much of their testing is done in more financially practical extreme environments such as underground mines and seabeds, etc. OffWorld’s initial prototypes focus on mining in extreme environments and will be tested in underground mines first, but these robotic workforces will be extremely helpful in a space environment for colonization preparation efforts. Kavelaars’ robot workforce is already designed for an end-to-end mining solution. From mining through processing, OffWorld’s robotic workforce is capable of handling the job.

OffWorld’s robots can go deeper underground, to mine in ventilation and extreme temperature conditions that humans could not withstand, and of course robots can work 24 hours a day for continuous workflow. With thousands of robots in a workforce, Kavelaars expects to move humans to supervisory roles, out of harm’s way, and allow advanced machine learning to continue to enhance the robots’ effectiveness. OffWorld’s robotic workforce is fully autonomous, end to end, but if a robot in the workforce experiences a contingency situation in which it cannot make the assessment on its own, human supervisors step in and handle it.

Kavelaars explains how OffWorld’s robots operate independently, in that they are not centrally programmed with a hive mentality, but perform as solo operators with a heightened awareness of the other robots working alongside them. This design helps to alleviate potential single-point failures as Kavelaars’ robots will recognize failures and independently, but with a collective understanding, support any one-off failures.

The robotics founder expounds upon her desire to take her robotic workforce to space and the preparation to make them fully autonomous in advance of their mission. Kavelaars’ team employs machine learning to help robots evaluate precise techniques for proper mining, to allow the robots to vary their approach based upon arising conditions, as opposed to simply inputting algorithms that would not allow for adjustments.

Additionally, the CTO and founder discuss her company’s plans to introduce robotic workforces for other areas of industry as well, such as large construction projects. As robotic workforces can work independently and autonomously, but can also work in tandem with humans, robots can significantly increase efficiency in many industries with challenging environments. And as machine learning advances and sophistication of robotic technology is refined even further, robotic workforces will be able to master practically any industry-type tasks.

  • Space Vacation 2022! – Frank Bunger, CEO & Founder, Orion Span – Space Hotels and the Push To Colonize the Great Beyond

Space Vacation 2022! – Frank Bunger, CEO & Founder, Orion Span – Space Hotels and the Push To Colonize the Great Beyond

Your name might not be Yuri Gagarin, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, or even George Jetson for that matter, but space travel has arrived for the average Joe or Jill with the means. Frank Bunger, CEO of Orion Span (orionspan.com), takes us on a delightful narrative journey through the preparations his company is making to deliver the actual journey, to space, as soon as 2022!

With Orion Span’s project, Aurora Station, a luxury space hotel, Bunger seeks to make another giant leap for mankind, toward long-term colonization of space. Through frequent space visits to stations such as Aurora Station, Bunger’s hope is that visitors will become more comfortable with the idea of long-term living in space. Surprisingly, Bunger explains that Aurora Station can be built for tens of millions of dollars as opposed to his competitors’ typical estimations in the hundreds of millions for space station architecture construction. Through Orion Span’s innovation in space station operation, Bunger details how his company is able to build and maintain at lower costs overall. From heating systems to waste management, Orion Span is changing the financial equation and innovating along the way.

The space hotelier provides an overview of the journey to Aurora Station and the daily activities of the adventurous travelers. Aurora Station will be in orbit, approximately 200 miles above the Earth’s surface. What Bunger has learned from feedback given by sub-orbital visitors is that people generally want an experience not just a ‘trip,’ and Aurora Station, with its impressive agenda and activity schedule over a 12-day stay, provides that. Training experiences and exercises, virtual reality simulation, and astronaut type training (including real space-oriented scientific experiments) are all on the Aurora Station activity list.

Additionally, Aurora Station provides a 100% zero gravity experience the entire stay unlike sub-orbitals that deliver only a few moments here and there. Bunger also discusses many of Aurora Station’s innovations that will make visitors’ stays more comfortable. One simple example would be lighting cues in the station that provide some comfort to visitors, giving them a sense of ‘up’ and ‘down’ directions, for in a zero gravity environment, there really is no ‘up’ or ‘down’ per se.

The space travel CEO also provides some insight into the possible advances in medicine that space existence in zero gravity might provide, from cancer research to organ growth. Bunger discusses the possibilities for exciting research in the medical field, and how the ISS (International Space Station) team is already pushing forward in many scientific areas. And Bunger delivers an interesting overview of the preparations for medical emergencies, micrometeoroids, travel to and from, etc. While the journey and stay is not for everyone, for those who have an adventurous spirit, Aurora Station will provide a truly life-changing experience. After all, traveling at roughly 20,000mph in orbit is not really something you get to do every day.

  • Crime Busters – David Selinger, Founder, Deep Sentinel – How Advanced Artificial Intelligence & Camera Technology Are Retooling Home Security

Crime Busters – David Selinger, Founder, Deep Sentinel – How Advanced Artificial Intelligence & Camera Technology Are Retooling Home Security

David Selinger is the founder of Deep Sentinel, a technology company that develops smart home surveillance systems that combine next-gen cameras, artificial intelligence (AI), and human intervention. The surveillance technology founder organically arrived in the home security space when he was motivated to dig deeper after a close neighbor was the victim of a home invasion.

With an extensive background in AI, Selinger came to the quick and startling realization that home security systems were woefully behind the technology curve and he set out to change that. Selinger discusses the state of home security before his company entered the space. He details how literally 25 years of innovation in traditional home security systems has amounted to not much more than wireless sensors, WIFI connectivity, and improved motion detection. Deep Sentinel seeks to fully integrate AI by using algorithms to analyze multiple security camera footage, which will then identify patterns in visual data, flag them, and predict crime before it even happens.

The surveillance technology founder discusses rapid advancements that have been made in security that were bolstered by deep learning technology promulgated by the gaming industry. Selinger discusses how the complex intersection of data, computing power, AI, and mathematics is ushering in a new era of advanced home security. He details how convolutional neural networks are an invaluable tool for machine learning that can greatly improve image recognition and classification.

A convolutional neural network is a class of intensive, feed-forward synthetic neural networks adept with analyzing visual imagery.

Selinger lays out some of his company’s security technology and explains how advanced motion detection that decreases security ‘noise,’ essentially defined as false alarms (dogs, wind, etc.

), allows for better real-time intervention for prevention of crime.

Selinger’s system can push the data and information to their trained security personnel within 10 seconds. And the combination of real-time data, integrated lights, and high decibel speakers which allow for immediate communication with the would-be criminal, often prevents or stops the crime as it is in progress. While perimeter security is the immediate goal, facial recognition technology will be coming in the near future.

  • Mind Control – Dr. Christoph Guger, CEO and President, g • tec (gtec.at) – How Groundbreaking Brain-Computer Interface Technology is Upending Everything We Thought We Knew About Brainwaves

Mind Control – Dr. Christoph Guger, CEO and President, g • tec (gtec.at) – How Groundbreaking Brain-Computer Interface Technology is Upending Everything We Thought We Knew About Brainwaves

While we might not yet be able to levitate objects by simply using our brainwaves, the rigorous study of brainwaves has certainly led to some astounding developments. Dr. Christoph Guger, CEO and President of g•tec (gtec.at), a medical engineering product development company, introduces the spectacular technology behind their groundbreaking work that allows an individual to control external devices with their thoughts.

Dr. Guger’s company, g•tec, is a pioneer in the field of brain–computer interface (BCI) technology. BCI creates a direct pathway of communication between a wired brain and a particular external device. Dr. Guger received his education in biomedical engineering at the University of Technology, Graz, Austria. Guger’s PhD work centered around real-time analysis of EEG data for the application into, and development of, brain-computer interface technology.

The medical engineering CEO explains the complex process that BCI uses to allow users who are paralyzed to communicate via brainwaves.

While the process is highly advanced, in simplest terms the BCI displays multiple characters and images on a screen and the user responds to the flashing images. Brainwaves are detected in this process and the computer translates the user’s brainwave responses into sentences.

Guger expounds upon the advances in stroke rehabilitation that BCI has enabled by allowing the user’s brainwaves to initiate electrical stimulators such that the brain learns to control the body again. And Guger discusses how BCI, amazingly, allows for select coma patients to actually respond via their brainwaves to yes / no questions. Thus the BCI, in these cases, is not only allowing physicians to gain a better understanding of their patient, but it provides families with renewed hope, and a connection to their loved ones previously thought to have been lost forever. BCI, in some cases, has miraculously given coma patients a new confidence that aids them in their ability to return to a conscious state.

The g•tec CEO gives an overview of some of the exciting new developments coming soon in the BCI technology arena, such as events in which programmers, designers, and artists come together for several days to develop new brain-computer interface applications.

Some of the areas being developed are for controlling drones, prosthetics, controls for television and lighting systems, surgical applications, and so much more.

Guger’s company, g•tec developed and launched their first commercially available BCI system back in 1999. Today, their advanced BCI system is in over 60 countries worldwide.
